Professor Kevin Norton BEd(PE) Hons, MA, PhD, AES, AEP has been a Professor of Exercise Science for almost 25 years.
Kevin has over 200 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals in sport and exercise science, and health promotion [https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Kevin_Norton]. He has over 30 years experience as an academic including 7 years as Head of the School at the University of South Australia. He has attracted over 35 successful competitive research grants (>$4 million). He teaches undergraduate courses in Applied Exercise Physiology, Athlete testing and Exercise Prescription. Kevin currently supervises PhD students in high-performance environments involving the Adelaide Football Club, Port Adelaide Football Club, Cycling Australia, and Adelaide United Soccer Club.
Professor Norton has had F/T external secondments to the International Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Management as the Director of Research and Knowledge Services [3 years at Sydney Olympic Park] funded by the Commonwealth Government of Australia and also to Human Kinetics publishers (Illinois, USA). He has held a Directors role on the National Board of Fitness Australia, been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and conducted numerous consultancies [national and international] as part of his academic position. He has been invited to present at national and international scientific conferences by professional organisations and Government Departments of Health and Sport.
Consultations for elite sports organisations
Kevin has undertaken consultancies for major sporting organisations over many years, including the Australian Football League (14 years as a game analyst and researcher of rule-injury relationships), Australian Rugby League and European Super League (investigating rule changes and the impact to game structure), and International Rugby Board (researching movement profiles of rugby referees), among others. Kevin held a game-day role for the Adelaide Football club as game analyst for 7 years.
Professor Norton is a Director of a successful private consultancy company in software development and high-performance sport. In these areas he has developed approximately 15 commercial and educational software products related to sport, health and/or exercise. These cover content relevant to school students through to products for professional exercise scientists; several are sold on the Apple App store. Major projects include software for the Singapore Ministry of Education – Talent ID software called Sport Match – for school children aged 8-15 yr. He was a co-author of the initial TrakPerformance tracking software prior to GPS use in field sports. He recently completed a software project in his role at the University of South Australia – Exercise Science Toolkit – which is an online educational and professional program covering a range of core areas of exercise and sport science (www.exercisesciencetoolkit.com). Kevin is a Director and owner of a commercial gym and clinical exercise physiology facility (Adelaide Fitness Solutions).
